La French Bakery in St. Augustine Beach: An Honest Review

Just a short stroll from the sand, La French Bakery brings the flavors of Paris to the laid-back vibe of St. Augustine Beach. Whether you’re starting your day with a flaky croissant, treating yourself to colorful macarons, or sitting down to a savory quiche, this cozy spot is a local favorite for authentic French baking.

A Bakery We’ve Loved for Years

We’ve been visiting La French Bakery since its early days in Uptown St. Augustine under different ownership, and it hasn’t skipped a beat. Today, under the care of Valérie Perchat, the bakery has flourished into a space that feels both fresh and familiar.

Valérie has put her own stamp on the décor — light, airy, and unmistakably French. The moment you walk in, it feels like the little bakeries we’ve adored in Paris and the South of France. The aroma of butter, coffee, and warm bread wraps around you instantly, making it impossible not to order “just one more” pastry.

The Pastries That Keep Us Coming Back

Croissants & Classics

The croissants are the stars here. Buttery, flaky layers that shatter perfectly with each bite. The pain au chocolat is a must if you love a richer treat, and the almond croissant is one of the best in town. These are the kinds of pastries that demand a good cappuccino and a few quiet minutes to enjoy.

Tarts & Éclairs

From fruit tarts that look like works of art to chocolate éclairs filled with silky cream, everything is made in classic French style. The fruit tarts glisten like jewels in the case, each one highlighting seasonal flavors.

On this trip, we tried the pear tart — and it was nothing short of amazing. Thinly sliced pears, layered delicately over almond cream in a crisp pastry shell, baked until golden. It struck that perfect balance of buttery richness, natural sweetness, and just enough texture from the fruit. Each bite reminded us of the rustic yet elegant desserts you’d find in French countryside bakeries.

Coffee & Cappuccinos

The pastries here are even better paired with their coffee drinks, which are every bit as carefully prepared. On our last visit, we ordered cappuccinos and not only were they smooth and rich — they came with a little extra charm. The barista topped them off with a smiley face in the foam, a small touch that made us smile and added to the welcoming, friendly vibe of the bakery.

Baguettes & Takeaway

We often grab a baguette to take home. Fresh, crusty on the outside and soft inside, it’s perfect for a picnic or pairing with cheese and wine later in the evening. A simple baguette from La French Bakery has a way of making even a Tuesday night dinner feel special.

More Than Pastries: Savory Sandwiches & Quiche Lorraine

While pastries might get the spotlight, the savory menu deserves just as much attention. The sandwiches, made with freshly baked baguettes, are layered with meats, cheeses, and spreads that make them hearty yet elegant — the kind of sandwich that feels like a proper meal, not just a grab-and-go snack.

And then there’s the quiche Lorraine. Golden on top, custardy inside, and rich with smoky bacon and cheese, it was nothing short of spectacular. One bite and we were instantly transported to a little café in the French countryside. Finding a quiche this good right here in St. Augustine Beach was a surprise — and it’s become one of our go-to orders.

Our Macaron Tradition

While croissants may be the everyday stars, the macarons hold a special place in our hearts. One of our favorite memories was right before a trip to Paris. We stopped by La French Bakery and ordered two of every macaron flavor they had available — a rainbow box of delicate, jewel-like cookies.

It became our send-off ritual: enjoying raspberry, pistachio, chocolate, and lemon macarons while dreaming of the Paris cafés we’d soon be visiting. It was fun, indulgent, and the perfect way to set the tone for our trip.

Even now, every time we bite into one, it takes us back to that moment. And then there are the larger macarons — something you don’t often see outside of France. In fact, the only other time we’ve come across them was at a bakery in Normandy, where oversized shells were sandwiched with generous layers of cream or ganache, turning them into something closer to a plated dessert than a bite-sized treat.

So why don’t you see them everywhere, especially in Paris?

A Little History

The modern macaron — the small, jewel-like version we all recognize today — became popularized in the 20th century, with Parisian pastry houses like Ladurée leading the way. These delicate “macarons de Paris” are small, colorful, and designed to be enjoyed in a single bite or two. Because of their elegance and consistency, they became the global standard for what a macaron should look like.

By contrast, the larger macarons have their roots in regional French baking traditions, particularly in Normandy and southwestern France, where rustic versions were made bigger, chewier, and often less about presentation and more about indulgence. They’re harder to find in Paris because the demand there leans toward the refined, boutique-style pastries that showcase precision and variety.

That’s what makes La French Bakery’s large macarons so special. They’re not just delicious; they’re a nod to a lesser-known French tradition that’s harder to track down unless you venture outside Paris. Each oversized macaron here at the beach feels like a bridge between those two worlds — the refined Parisian style and the heartier, regional French version.
