Pittsburgh Gifts: The Pierogi, the Chipped Ham and the Cookie Table

Pittsburgh’s food is its autobiography. Pierogi came up out of church basements in Polish Hill and the Strip. Chipped ham came out of an Isaly’s slicer. The cookie table came from grandmothers who decided a wedding cake on its own was not enough. This collection is drawn from that — the food first, the skyline second.

The pierogi is rendered as stained glass. That is the idea the whole collection turns on: the jewel-toned panels you see in the windows of an old South Side church, applied to a dumpling. It runs across a sweatshirt, a mug, an apron, a cutting board, an ornament, a can cooler, a plush blanket and a soy candle, so you can pick the format that suits the person and keep the artwork.

The rest is Pittsburgh shorthand — a chipped ham barbecue sandwich, the skyline in black and white, a Yinz ornament, and a set of napkins made for a cookie table. All of it is original artwork, printed to order in the USA. None of it is licensed team merchandise, and none of it carries a team mark.

Who it’s for

The one who moved away

Homesickness for Pittsburgh is mostly specific foods. A pierogi mug on a desk in Denver does more work than a skyline print ever will. The kitchen pieces travel best — the mug, the apron, the cutting board.

The one whose house everyone ends up at

The apron, the cutting board and the cookie table napkins are for the host. The napkins in particular land at bridal showers, where the cookie table is the whole point and nobody needs it explained.

Someone who just likes pierogi

Plenty of people have no Pittsburgh connection at all and simply want the dumpling. The stained-glass design reads as folk art before it reads as a city, so the sweatshirt and the plush blanket work anywhere.

Why pierogi, chipped ham and a cookie table

Pierogi arrived with Eastern European families who came for the mills, and for decades the best ones in the city were made by hand in church basements as fundraisers — not sold in restaurants. That lineage is why a pierogi reads as a Pittsburgh object at all, and why the mascot race at Pirates games works as a civic joke rather than a marketing idea.

Chipped ham is Isaly’s doing: ham shaved so thin it falls apart in the hand, which is exactly what makes it work piled into a barbecue sandwich. It is one of the few foods a city can claim because of how it was cut rather than how it was cooked.

The cookie table is a western Pennsylvania wedding tradition. Families bake for weeks beforehand and the table can run longer than the head table. If you did not grow up with it, it sounds like a nice touch; if you did, a wedding without one is missing something. The full story of how the city’s food became its identity is in our Pittsburgh gift guide.

Choosing between them

The kitchen pieces. Mug, apron, cutting board and the cookie table napkins. These are the safest gifts in the collection because they carry no sizing risk and they get used daily rather than stored.

The wearables. A pierogi crewneck sweatshirt, a chipped ham barbecue tee and a black-and-white skyline tee. Standard US unisex sizing, which runs closer to a men’s cut than a fitted one — size up if you are guessing for someone.

The ones nobody thinks to buy. A pierogi soy candle, two can coolers, two plush throw blankets and two glass ornaments. These are the pieces that get a reaction, and they sidestep sizing entirely.

Questions worth answering before you order

Is any of this official team merchandise?

No. Every design here is original artwork made for this shop. There are no team names, logos or colours used as marks — if you want black and gold with a logo on it, this is the wrong page.

How long does it take to arrive?

Each item is printed after you order it rather than pulled off a shelf, so allow production time on top of shipping. For December, order earlier than feels necessary.

Can I return it if the size is wrong?

Honestly: no, not for sizing — each item is printed for that order. Check the size chart on the listing, and when you are guessing for someone else, size up.

What is a cookie table, exactly?

A western Pennsylvania wedding tradition where relatives bake hundreds of cookies and lay them out alongside — or instead of — the cake. The napkins are made for that table, and for the bridal shower that precedes it.
